Why does an itch actually itch?
An itch begins in the skin and is processed by the brain. It is a message—not the cause.
The message pathway
Something stimulates itch-sensitive structures in the scalp. Sensory nerves respond, the signal travels through the nervous system, and the brain processes it as itch. The sensation is real—but it cannot identify the trigger on its own.
What may activate the pathway
- Product buildup or a new ingredient
- Tension from a tight style
- Sweat, heat or humidity
- Dry-feeling or flaky scalp
- Scalp conditions, allergens or irritation
