Decode the Itch · Lesson 04 of 10

What happened before your scalp started itching?

Look backward. Timing can reveal the first clue in your scalp’s story.

SkeenQueens card listing six timing clues to investigate before scalp itching
When did the pattern change?

Timing is a clue

Ask what happened before the sensation began—not only what you did after it. A symptom that follows a new style, product, material or routine change deserves a different investigation from one that appears gradually.

Look backward

  • New braids or another protective style
  • A new shampoo, gel, oil, spray, dye or adhesive
  • More sweating, heat or humidity
  • More time than usual between scalp cleansing
  • Pulling, pressure or tenderness from the style
  • Different braiding hair, extensions or material
Your next stepComplete this sentence: “My scalp began itching after ______.” If you are unsure, write “not clear yet” and keep observing.
