When should an itchy scalp get more attention?

The goal is not to panic. The goal is to notice when the story changes—and know when not to keep guessing.

Observation can help you recognize the threshold.

Arrange professional care

Make an appointment when itching keeps returning, worsens, becomes severe, affects sleep or daily life, or does not improve with simple self-care.

Get checked sooner

  • Significant pain or tenderness
  • Swelling, drainage, pus or yellow crusting
  • Bleeding, open or worsening sores
  • Spreading irritation or color changes
  • Hair loss occurring with scalp changes

Seek urgent help

Seek urgent medical care for fever with signs of skin infection. For breathing difficulty or major swelling, seek emergency care immediately.

Prepare for the appointmentBring your timeline, product and braiding-material list, clear photos if the appearance changes, and the questions you want answered.
